- The Aveda Fredric’s Institute opens its doors. A private, licensed school of cosmetology, esthiology and nail esthetics and retail center-the school provides the salon network with an opportunity to hire individuals educated in all aspects of salon operations. “The Institute is part of our ‘ecosystem’ and helps put salons on the path of success,” says owner, Frederic Holzberger.

- American Salon, American Spa and Les Nouvelles Esthetique cover the Institute’s debut and grand opening.An article in Salon Today, “Beyond the Basics,” features the Institute’s progressive approach to beauty school.

- Salon News - Institute featured and photographed in “School Ties” article. “As cosmetology schools across the country revamp their image with cutting edge spa-like decor, they are, in effect, inspiring a new generation of stylists.”
- Cincinnati City Beat staff votes Aveda Fredric’s Institute “Best Bargain Styling” in their annual “Best Of the City” Issue.
- First Cosmetology class graduates with second Esthiology class.
- The Aveda Fredric’s Institute receives its first “Award of Excellence” from the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology. This award is given to schools who have placed in the top 20% of all schools as measured by passage percentage. This award will be received again in August each year up to 2005.
- Cincinnati Magazine recognizes the Aveda Fredric’s Institute as “Best Budget Indulgence” in their annual “Best of the City” issue.
- Modern Salon - Students are recognized for a Hair and Fashion Show fundraiser produced in September of this year. The benefactor, Camp Sunrise, a local summer camp free for children who have been impacted by HIV and AIDS, was presented with a check for $1,700 at the event. Modern Salon covers the school again in July of 2001 for their Hair and Fashion Show raising nearly $3,000 for Breast Cancer research and awareness.
- American Salon - “Aveda Fredric’s Institute Thrives” reports on the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology’s Award of Excellence and includes a photo of the first graduating class.
- Les Nouvelles Esthetique covers Institute hosting Tour of World Gymnastic Champions for hair, nail and makeup services.
- The first annual Better Business Bureau Torch Awards for marketplace ethics is held in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Aveda Fredric’s Institute is a finalist out of 49 nominations. This award is given in recognition of a business’s outstanding commitment to ethical standards in their relationship to their customers, employees, suppliers, competitors and surrounding community.
- TSA Beacon Award - six students from the Aveda Fredric’s Institute are awarded The Salon Association Beacon Award allowing them to travel to the annual TSA convention.
- Ohio Stylist and Salon - Feature article “‘the Holzbergers: Raising the Bar in Education” calls the Institute “one of the premier educational centers in the country.”
- Ohio Stylist and Salon - Feature article “Project Daymaker Takes Generosity on the Road.” Daniel and Nicole Holzberger are able to work on Project Daymaker for the first time since graduating in cosmetology from the Aveda Fredric’s Institute. A 2500 sq. ft. addition of the Institute is completed. The expansion includes an addition of a Color room, classroom, expanded Esthiology department, makeup area, 2 restrooms and office. The expansion is reported in Ohio Stylist, Sept. 2002, DaySpa, Oct. 2002 and Skin Inc., Oct. 2002.
- The Aveda Fredric’s Institute is once again a finalist for the annual Better Business Bureau Torch Awards for marketplace ethics is held in Cincinnati, Ohio. This award is given in recognition of a business’s outstanding commitment to ethical standards in their relationship to their customers, employees, suppliers, competitors and surrounding community.
- TSA Beacon Award - Out of 100 entrants, 17 students from the Aveda Fredric’s Institute are awarded The Salon Association Beacon Award allowing them to travel to the annual TSA convention in Las Vegas and participate in an opportunity to jump start their careers.
- The Aveda Fredric’s Institute is host to Seventeen Magazine’s Sweet Stuff sweeptakes winner and nine of her friends. They were all pampered with an afternoon of beauty by the students of the Institute. Seventeen found the Institute on the internet and loved the services and website graphics!
- Aveda Earth Month Hero Shero award for highest number of pledges collected.
- Earth and Humanity award for Business Place Ethics is presented to the Institute at the 2003 Aveda/Fredric’s Mid America Tour.
- The Aveda Fredric’s Institute receives its fourth consecutive “Award of Excellence” from the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology. This award is given to schools who have placed in the top 20% of all schools as measured by passage percentage.
- The Aveda Fredric’s Institute holds its first annual Natural Talent Scholarship contest - $25,000 in tuition scholarships were presented with the grand prize winner receiving a full tuition to the Aveda Fredric’s Institute for enrollment in the July 2004 Cosmetology class.
- The Aveda Fredric’s Institute receives a three year accreditation from NACCAS. The National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and accredits about 1000 schools serving more than 100,000 students.
- TSA Beacon Award - Out of 100 entrants, 15 students from the Aveda Fredric’s Institute are awarded The Salon Association Beacon Award allowing them to travel to the annual TSA convention in Orlando, FL and learn from the masters of the industry. Each year additional students will travel to the TSA annual convention.
- The Aveda Fredric’s Institute holds its Natural Talent Scholarship contest - $20,000 in tuition scholarships were presented with the grand prize winner receiving a full tuition to the Aveda Fredric’s Institute for enrollment in the January 2005 Cosmetology class.
- The Aveda Fredric’s Institute receives it’s fifth consecutive Award of Excellence from the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology commending the staff and students for a job well done.
- The Aveda Fredric’s Institute is proud to once again be a finalist for the annual Better Business Bureau Torch Awards for marketplace ethics held in Cincinnati, Ohio.

February 2005 - Alumni Daniel and Nikki Holzberger are featured in Salon City Star Magazine with a Spring Makeover. The March, June and October issues feature Daniel and Nikki again.
- The AFI is featured in CinWeekly in “How to Give a Massage.”
- Six AFI students are featured on the front page, full color, of the Cin. Enquirer Tempo section for an article entitled “Hair that Stands up to the Heat.”
- The AFI hold its first Spa-Esthiology Nail Esthetics Scholarship.
- AFI Students participate in Fall Style trends feature in CinWeekly.
- The AFI holds the first Spa-Esthiology Nail Esthetics Scholarship contest in Indiana. Thirteen finalists receive a $1000 scholarship and one full scholarship winner.
- The Aveda Fredric’s Institute opens a second location in Indianapolis, Indiana at Castleton Square Mall.
- The Aveda Fredric’s Institute Indianapolis receives Indiana State Board licensing. First Cosmetology and Esthiology classes begin December 7.
- Six Aveda Fredric’s Institute Cincinnati students travel to San Diego for annual TSA Convention under a TSA Beacon Student scholarship.

– Three Aveda Fredric’s Institute Cincinnati students along with Instructor, Michelle Bertke, participate in a 14 page Bridal Guide by providing all of the hair, up-styling and makeup.
– The Aveda Fredric’s Institute Indianapolis celebrates its grand opening, Sunday, March 12th hosting over 900 guests. Many special guests attended including Aveda founder, Horst Rechelbacher. The celebration included a ribbon cutting and dedication with the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce. Proceeds from retail sales were donated to the local Habitat for Humanity chapter and Project Daymaker. Thank you to everyone for your continued support and dedication to “Develop the Future Leaders in the World of Beauty and Wellness.”
– The AFI Indianapolis receives great design recognition in several publications including: STORES, Beauty Launch Pad, Modern Salon and Skin Inc.
– The AFI Indianapolis receives recognition from Salon Today for being one of the Salon of the Year, Top Salons of Distinction.
– Frederic Holzberger is presented the Lifetime Achievement Award by Aveda Corporation at Aveda Mid America Tour, and was inducted into the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame in Hamilton, Ohio. Both distinguished awards honor the many great contributions that Frederic has made the beauty and wellness industry.
– The Cincinnati and Indianapolis Aveda Fredric’s Institutes are presented the “President’s Environmental Award”, and instructors Dede Mounce and Amy Lewis are presented the “Leading Through Education Award” at the 2006 Aveda Institute’s Summit.
– The Aveda Fredric’s Institute students continue to regularly participate in CinWeekly’s Bridal, Spring and Fall Fashion issues by creating the hair and makeup looks for the models.
– The Aveda Fredric’s Institute Cincinnati completes its third expansion creating office space and 3 new classrooms on the upper level, making room for additional service stations, rejuvenation room and dispensary expansions to be completed this spring.
- Aveda Institute students, Jessica Zehnder and Mandy Wooten are selected as finalists in the North American Hairstylist Awards (NAHA) Student Hairstylist of the Year category. The Aveda Fredric’s Institute Indianapolis is also selected as a finalist in the Salon Design of the Year category. Awards presenation will take place July 15.
– The first post graduate makeup classes begin at the Indianapolis Institute location. This course was created to enhance opportunities for our graduates within the beauty industry and fill the demand for additional education in the world of makeup.
