In the June 2006 issue of Salon Today Magazine the Aveda Fredric's Institute received the prestigious "Salon of Distinction" award from the nationally acclaimed Salon Today magazine, the leading salon owner publication of the salon industry.
Salons were judged on six design catagories: Uses of Color, Lighting, Flooring, Efficient Use of Space, Consistancy of Design and Overall Aesthetics.

- "We have designed an enhanced learning envirnment that marries high-tech equipment with natural lighting through ample skylights. Comfort features include ergonomically designed chairs and color to enhance the focus of students and instructors. Much thought was given to the psychology of color—it was added through use of varying materials, textures and applications through flooring, paint, cabinetry, wall material and fixtures."

Thirteen young women and one gentleman with a strong desire to become spa professionals recently competed in a make-up makeover to vie for a full scholarship to the new Aveda Fredric's Institute (AFI), located in Castleton Square Mall in Indianapolis, IN (soon to be licensed by the Indiana State Board of Cosmetology Examiners). As with all competitions, only one person could be the winner (valued at $10,095.00) and it was awarded to Corrie Stewart, resident of Indianapolis. Unlike other contests and thanks to the generosity of Frederic and Julie Holzberger, founders of the Institute, ALL of the other finalists received a $1,000 scholarship toward their tuition, bringing the Holzberger's total scholarship award to $23,095.
All the entrants submitted an essay describing how they would benefit from the Spa industry and why they were the best candidate for the scholarship. In addition, they were required to share their knowledge by responding to a question regarding the most important issues facing spa professionals today. Along with the essay, applicants were asked to send a "before" photo of the model they would use during the makeup application if they were selected for a finalist.
The competition culminated on Saturday, October, 29, 2005 with the contestants preparing and presenting their models, center court, in the Castleton Square Mall. The judging was performed by Leslie Munsell, Global make-up master with Aveda and co-owner of Van Michael Miami (Florida) salon, Suzanne Bersch, publicist for Fredric's Corporation and former Associate Beauty Editor at ELLE magazine, and Melissa Steele, an esthetician and advanced skin care educator.
"I look forward to being educated in every aspect of this industry," wrote Ms. Stewart on her essay. "I will prove to be a good investment by continuing my education with this Institute as well as becoming a top representative of the class." Ms. Stewart will be a member of the first class to graduate form the new Institute in Indianapolis. • •
